BLE, LoRa, Wi-Fi, Cellular and MQTT—Choosing the Stack

How range, energy, payload, mobility, topology, and operating cost shape connectivity decisions.

Connectivity is not a feature checklist. The right stack emerges from where the device operates, how often it communicates, how much energy it has, and who will support the network.

Map the physical environment

Document distance, obstructions, mobility, installation access, interference, and whether a phone or gateway is acceptable. These constraints eliminate unsuitable options quickly.

Model traffic and energy

Payload size, transmission frequency, acknowledgement, retries, and radio wake time shape battery life and service cost. Test with realistic worst cases.

Separate transport from messaging

Radio choice and application messaging solve different problems. MQTT can provide clear topics, delivery levels, and session behaviour across several underlying networks.
